2020.11.24 02:59 A-friendly-fellow Sex spy hidden

This one ended up getting away from me, leading to five pages worth of pitch. I feel it is both very fitting with the feel of Havenfall routes and nothing like any of the others at the same time.
...
Mona: I swear! I swear. Grace: I think you've been watching too many of those crappy documentaries. Mona: Look, it was shaped like a saucer and it was flying. What else could it have been. Grace: I dunno, a weather balloon? . Mona: It was definitely, positively not that.
Grace was meant to go to college but this mysterious scholarship that she's acquired somehow has taken most of her attention. Mona Starr, big sister, has tried to ask after this but Grace has been secretive about it. It's some kind of government-run, law... thing but that's all Mona can extract from her. Mona confesses to herself this secrecy has sent her imagination run amok, perhaps those low quality conspiracy theory documentaries she watches had more of an effect on her than she realised. Whatever it is Grace is excited about it and that is enough for Mona.
Dropping Grace off and a tearful farewell later Mona is driving back. It is getting dark and she has the radio on. Suddenly the truck splutters and stops. At first she rolls her eyes at the piece of junk yet again failing to go but then realise this is different. The sound, the feel, it's not like the other times.
She gets out of her truck and looks up. There's something in the darkening sky, a metallic saucer-like object hovering above. However before she can get a better look at it with her phone it vanishes. There it is again. Over the last few weeks she's been seeing those. . Soon after a car drives past and stops beside her. A person in a yellow jumpsuit steps out. As luck would have it they are a mechanic and offers to look at the truck. She accepts and it's soon apparent that it's not going anywhere. They can fix it but will need it to be towed to their shop. In the meantime they can give her a lift. They were on their way to Havenfall as it so happens and also they know someone who can bring it there later.
On the way back to Havenfall the two bond very quickly during their drive. One thing of note is that they never mention their name, no matter how Mona drives the conversation. Eventually there is a lull in the conversation where Mona is looking out of the window, watching the sky. The kind stranger notices this and points it out. Mona answers stating that she thought she saw something previously. Some encouragement does end up with her admitting she thought she saw a UFO and that she's had numerous sightings. At the mention of such the stranger goes quiet, etched in their expression a concerned frown. They pull over, stating there's someone they need to call, and with an awkward smile jumps out of the car. . Mona hears a name, one that she recognises. Razi, her boss at the place she works, the bowling alley. This is surprising but since they are heading that Havenfall, a small town, it's not unreasonable. Strange though, he never mentioned them at any point. . Just then Mona spies the flying saucer once again and hears the acquaintance of Razi curse under their breath.
Mona: Just what is going on? Who is this person?: You wouldn't believe me but... for whatever reason they seem mighty interested in you. Mona: They? Who's they? Who are you? Seriously, who is this person?: Moth... ahem... man. Mona: What? Mothman?: Yep. Hi, friendly neighbourhood Mothman at your service.
"Mothman" arrives in Havenfall and makes for the bowling alley, Mona's place of work. They attempt to bid her farewell but she wishes to know what is happening. In the alley she sees a group of individuals already assembled inside. The town's doctor and sheriff in addition to her friend JD and her boss. They all wear the same concerned expression as Mothman did at the mention of UFO's.
It is here Mona learns the truth. Who these people really are. Vampires, warewolves, djinns and even cryptids. It's enough to make any human's head spin. She also learns what these saucers are. They're surveillance drones. They've been spotted around the world monitoring it for an unknown purpose and sent by a race little known by even those clued into the hidden world. All anyone knows about them is they live underneath the earth at the center. Lately these machines have appeared en masse over Havenfall. At first Razi couldn't discern why, all he can deduce is that they're searching for something. That was why Mothman was headed to Havenfall, to figure that out. Razi had cast a ward to block transmissions to keep the town safe from whatever they're searching for. Then one of the saucers was found outside of it close to Mona, tailing her. That's what they were doing here. They were looking for her and they found her when she left with her sister. But why? No one can answer that.
They are dealing with such an unknown, anything could happen. The biggest fear that Razi expresses is that, now these underground dwellers know where Mona is they might try more hands-on tactics to take her and who knows what they will do to the town. Mona says this means she cannot stay in Havenfall as long as the saucers are active. She will be in danger but if she is seen leaving town then it will be safe. Mothman mentions they have somewhere to stay, somewhere safe from the saucers' radars. An old abandoned military base. . Mona packs some bags and the two lead the saucers away from Havenfall then, using Razi's magic, conceal themselves for the rest of the journey.
Over the course of the story Mona and Mothman hide out in a bunker at the military base, of which has been furbished to be very homely. The two quickly become close friends, at first Mothman is shy and distant but slowly opens up as they spend time together. It's not so much breaking the ice as it is slowly chipping away at it over time. Regardless that is what they, Mothman and Mona, do. At some point Mona gets her truck back and Mothman fixes it. They're so skilled in fact that the truck runs better than it's ever been.
Not just that though, the two investigate the creatures that control the drones and why they're interested in Mona. Their investigations bring her to discover the website of a well-funded group that have been keeping tabs on these creatures, going by the name of Frontline. Getting in touch with their socials she discovers the creatures do indeed reside in the center of the earth. They are a race almost identical in appearance to a human. They've been able to reverse-engineer and harness the technology found in the ancient civilization found at the earth's center, Agartha, and now call it home. Frontline calls these creatures Agarthans for reasons that should be obvious. They don't know what their end goal is or why they're after Mona but they know how one can reach Agartha. When a saucer rises from the ground it leaves an intricate indent in the ground, one might recognise them as a crop circle. Frontline has observed that saucers can only get back through the crop circles they leave behind. When they do the indent disappears. In order to enter Agartha, Frontline has been trying to capture a saucer with little luck. They're way too fast. . Mothman has the ability to interfere with electronics. It had gotten them into trouble in the past, interfering with the electronics of folks' cars as they drove by. Since then they were able to control it. Frontline agree to meet Mona and Mothman and work together. . Leading up to the meet up, near where a crop circle has formed closeby to the base, Mothman timidly approaches Mona. Their face is red.
Mothman: So... I need to tell you something. Mona: Yes? Are you OK? Mothman: I'll get back to you on that. I've been meaning to tell you for a while. I um... Mona: I'm listening. Mothman: ...Kinda... Mona: Go on. Mothman: ...Like... (Wait. Are they?) Mothman: ...You? (...) (Well, shit.)
So it is out. Very awkwardly but even so it is out. Mona never really considered them as anything more than a friend but mainly because it wasn't on the table. Now that it is she finds herself not averse to the idea. On the other hand they have a good friendship and to pursue this further may jeopardise it. She ends up discussing this directly to Mothman and they will be sure to not let this ruin what they have. The two agree to go slow and explore this avenue carefully, with a simple coffee date to start off with to see how things pan out.
First thing first though, there's work to do and the day to meet Frontline arrives. Under the cover of night Mona drives the two to the rendezvous point in her expertly repaired truck. Frontline is a small group, consisting of a ragtag crew of multicultural characters both young and old. It's difficult to imagine they're funded by anyone wealthy. Everyone is almost assembled, just one more joins them. . It's Grace. . The scholarship wasn't that at all, it was an invitation to join as a researcher of Frontline, monitoring the saucers. It is she who found out the connection between Agartha and the crop circles. Grace is equally shocked to see Mona, why is it she is targeted so?
A saucer flies overhead, directing everyone's attention, and heads towards the crop circle. It's time. Mothman sprouts shimmering wings, their eyes shine in the dark and they rush the machine. The crew and Mona trail behind preparing equipment to help catch the thing. In the end they pull it off to the crew's applause.
Later, Mona and Grace sit together apart from the group. They talk about what they have discovered only recently. Soon Grace makes mention of her developing feelings towards one member, the feisty green-eyed brunette named Gwen.
The crew may look ragtag but their equipment and connections are far from. They have the means to transport the large machine and agree to do so to the base. After that is done there is the matter of figuring out how the drone works. Mothman may be good but even they have limits, and require an extra brain to work on. They decide to call an old friend of theirs, one they haven't seen in a long time. She goes by the name Bigfoot.
Bigfoot says she'll arrive in a few days. In the downtime, Mona and Mothman go on that date they talked about. Holy hell, turns out Mothman is great. While Mona didn't initially have any feelings for them to start with she certainly has by the time the date is over. They speak of family, Mona who is still shaken by the death of their parents and how she had to effectively become Grace's mother. Mothman doesn't know who their parents are. They don't even really know what they are. To end of the date they share a chaste, somewhat awkward, but very sweet kiss.
With that they're officially dating. The announcement gives Grace enough courage to ask Gwen out soon after.
When Bigfoot arrives it's straight to business. She and Mothman get to work while Mona integrates herself into Frontline. Soon enough the two cryptids finish and the saucer is in their control. Over the next number of episodes we see their new piece of tech in action as well as the ancient city of Agartha in all its glory. Most importantly we learn of the plan the Agarthans have in store. A hostile global takeover to plant themselves as superior beings over the living and near-living. They plan to take America and use it as a staging place to expand across the world. This is according to what appears to be the leader.
To make a story that spans ten seasons short, Frontline, which our leads end up joining, works to thwart the plans of the Agarthans. An event proves Mona to become Fronline's leader and an agent working for the Agarthans is revealed, someone Mothman has history with. Another cryptid by the name of Manticore.
On the romance side of things, the relationship is a slow build with not much happening outside of holding hands. They've got a low libido but very tactile, meaning a big helping of cuddling but not so much in the way of sex. When the first sex scene does arrive they are very nervous, not wanting to mess up their first time. It's not spectacular but that doesn't matter to her.
Of particular note is that the Agarthans appear human. Occasionally however they sprout luminescent wings and their eyes shine in darkness. This solves the mystery of Mothman's origins, they are a Agarthan. . After this revelation Mothman wonders if it would be worthwhile entering Agartha directly. In reality they want to know about themself and their birthplace. Regardless it does seem a worthwhile endeavour.
More conflict happens as Frontline prepare to enter Agartha. Manticore destroys their commandeered machine meaning they need to find a different way inside. Manticore is defeated as Frontline and Havenfall's finest come together to fight him. The defeat leads to another revelation, to do with Mona's parents. They were monster hunters, their bedroom, which Mona has refused to enter until now, contains a secret room where they kept their weapons and other equipment. Of more note however are blueprints to what looks to be a portal or a door of some kind. This is specifically a door into Agartha, a permenant entrance and exit into the city without the need for saucers or crop circles. They were so close to finishing before their fate. The Admiral was aware of this since mom and dad sought to defeat her. This is why she followed Mona, in the hopes to find the entrance and prevent its creation. She killed Mona and Grace's parents. It's personal now.
With the help of Razi and his sister Roshni the sisters build the door, completing their parent's work, with some attempt to stop them from the Admiral, whom we interact with for the first time. The season ends with the arrival into Agartha.
There they find that not all Agarthans are hellbent on world domination. In fact, it turns out most of these creatures are otherwise peaceful. The saucers were merely to survey the surface world for harmless scientific reasons, that is until the admiral assassinated Agartha's president and took power. Now there is a resistance group to stop the admiral and her reign of terror. Frontline works with this resistance, the leader is named Ajanti, a neutrois. They're actually the admiral's sibling who feels great remorse for the loss of a dear sister of their's when she became mad with power. During moments of downtime Mona and Mothman explore the city.
When the climax arrives the forces of the admiral and the resistance clash. Mona leads Frontline, ironically enough, away from the frontline, to engage the admiral directly. The showdown with her reveals she knew Mothman's mother. She's alive somewhere in Agartha. Mona leads Frontline and a small detachment of Agarthan rebels. They defeat her, Mona and Grace dealing the final blow and winning the war, placing Ajanti as the president. Their first act is to halt all moves to take the surface world.
With that done Mona expects Mothman would want to search for their mother, but no. Perhaps one day but they prefer, at least for the moment, to look to the future. They and Mona's future, cue lowering to one knee.
Frontline travels back to the surface world for wedding preparations.
Season Ten tends to be distant from the main story, occurring after a time skip of about ten years. This season has the married couple returning to Agartha in search of Mothman's mother.

2020.11.23 16:57 Disastrous-Kale-913 OC Discussion

I would like to see what types of characters people have come up with. I will give a few of mine, feel free to post yours. Be respectful and if you cant draw (like me), describe your character(s) verbally, like I do. You can write a background and how they relate to other characters if you want. Just keep it civil and within the community guidelines. Some are Biblically inspired.
OC 1:
Name(s): Magnus Mortem, Uncle Magi.
Titles: Magnus the Magnificent, Magnus the Magician, Overlord Magnus.
Occupation(s) in life: Formally a conman, Magnus quickly saw how his schemes ruined countless lives after conning a rich widow, who took her own life because of the scheme. Magnus tried to pursue a more honorable career as a magician, and swore not to go back to his old ways, but the damage had already been done, his soul marked for Hell.
Date and cause of death: Ironically, it was not a freak accident or time's inevitable march that killed Magnus, but a con-woman, who after marrying him, stabbed him in his sleep. Has since been wary of romance, fearing betrayal, and a broken heart. 1867.
Appearance: Black Tuxedo with Purple accents, pale skin, purple eyes, when angered, the eyeball becomes black and the Iris resembles that of a reptile's. Looks like a pale human, a rarity among demons.
Abilities: A wide arrange of magical abilities and a skilled manipulator, Magnus can usually use his charisma to get out of a situation. Failing that, which is rare, he can easily take down most if not all attackers simultaneously, and can escape or break into even the most secure locations.
Personality/relationships: A Gentleman, one would think he doesn't deserve to be in hell. Often interrupts the activities of demons seeking to take advantage of others. Is charming towards those of the fairer sex, many female demons swoon over him. He does not engage in intimacy, thinking that most are just out to either use him or to gain power. He ingratiated himself to the Magnes, quickly become an extension of "the family". Is the Uncle of Charlie. Is mad at Lucifier's lack of support for Charlie's plan. Is one of the few men that Vaggie trusts. Niffty and he are polite to one another, while Husk is in awe of Magnus's drink mixing, knowledge, and consumption. Angel Dusk once tried to force himself onto Magnus, until Magnus snapped his fingers and hypnotized Angel into a shy french maid, who cleaned up Angel's room and threw out his "Contraband", much to Angel's horror. Angel has since been wary of Magnus. To add to his authenticity as a performer, Magnus has bracers the suppress a demon's magic, so that he can perform tricks without using actual power, much to the bewilderment of Vaggie, Angel, and Husk, and the joy of Charlie and Alastor. Though they appear friendly to one another, Magnus has made it clear to Alastor that if he harms Charlie in any way, Magnus will make sure he lives long enough to experience being fed to Lucifier's hellhounds. Alastor, secretly, is afraid of Magnus. Has joined the Hotel supposedly to be the resident entertainer, but really to be close to Charlie, and to keep her safe, come Hell of Holy Water...
OC 2:
Name(s): Glitch, Glitchy
Titles: Exterminator, Unit 304567
Occupation(s) in Life: Unknown
Date and Cause of death: Unknown
Appearance: A damaged Exterminator Angel, with broken horns and no halo. Wears a hooded robe to conceal his true form from the demons of hell. His LED face occasionally "glitches". Can change the display to show a smiling face, frowning face, or a confused face.
Abilities: Able to summon a wide arsenal of angel weapons, from knives to spears. Is also highly competent in hand to hand combat, and possesses enough strength to break the hands of most demons. When not hidden by his robes, Glitch's wings enable him to fly. While he has no memories of his life before being an Exterminator, Glitch has extensive knowledge of heaven, knows the designations of over 1,223,217,000 exterminator "units", including "Unit 10666", who he claims is Vaggie. Has an Eidetic memory.
Personality/relationships: Although Glitch appears naive to some, that is merely because he has not had the experience before, or a subroutine prepared for a situation. He recently became disconnected from the Exterminator network, though has harbored independent thoughts for a long time. Venerates "Unit 10666" as the first to defy the "makers" programing. Will occasionally glitch in one of two ways, either saying a word or syllable over and over again, or have his LED face turn red and launch into a speech about how he will "righteously" slay the demons of hell in the name of God, etc. Both can be "fixed" by a swift blow to the head, either delivered by himself or someone else. Glitch will apologize(or thank the individual who came to his aid), and then continue where he left off. Refers to Charlie as "Miss Charlotte" and sees her as "a true angel", and is willing to protect her no matter the cost. Is friendly towards Angel Dust, and enjoys playing pranks with him, though not if it is harmful to Vaggie or Charlie. Engages in word play with Alastor, who he sees as the ideal guide to life in hell, and Alastor has a soft spot for the fallen angel, seeing as they are both willing to make certain demons suffer (not that Alastor would admit that, ever, to anyone). Polite to "Miss Niffty" and will often ask questions to Husker, much to Huskers annoyance. Seeks the approval of Vaggie, sometimes referring to her as "sister", which angers Vaggie, who either doesn't want to, or actually doesn't, remember her time as an exterminator, if it happened at all. To avoid conflicts, Glitch will simply call her "Vaggie". Is highly protective of his "friends" and sees the yearly Extermination as wrong. Though he doesn't have faith in most demon, he has faith in Charlie, and seeks to assist and please in anyway possible (apart from intimacy).
OC 3:
Name(s): Simulare, Simon Simulare
Title(s): The Faceless Demon, The Actor, Agent Simulare, Sir Simulare
Occupation(s) in Life: An MI6 agent turned actor, Simulare was a master of disguise, deception, and leaving no evidence that he was ever there. His many clandestine missions on behalf of MI6 earned him his fate in hell.
Date and Cause of Death: Retiring at an early age, his promising career as an actor is cut short when he was killed by muggers on his way home. His last thoughts in the land of the living were not of pain or anger, but of confusion, summed up with a single question, "Since when were street thugs armed with suppressed Walther P99s?". Classified.
Appearance: When not using his abilities, Simulare will appear as a pale white humanoid in a tailored suit, with no facial features, and hand have no finger prints. Has a mouth cannot be seen until it is open. While it does not open to speak, can be used for food and drink. When going into "full demon mode", his body and limbs will stretch and a maw of razor sharp teeth will open up where his "face" would be. Hands become long claws.
Abilities: While all demons technically can shape-shift, none can do it like Simulare can. He can look like anyone, and given enough time and research, can convincingly impersonate anyone, to a certain point. He cannot mimic abilities or memories, so the mentioning of private experiences can be used to determine if he is impersonating someone. That being said, if something about an individual is recorded, written down, or filmed, he will find a way to get his hands on it to make his impersonation as perfect as possible. He can also change the composition of his body, making blades of metal out of his arms, or into a liquid to move through a vent or grate. He is also armed with twin Walther P99, with the barrels engraved with the words "Manners maketh the man" and carries suppressors to compliment them. Is an expert in various forms of hand to hand combat, and is experienced in weapons, from knives to rocket launchers. Has an Eidetic Memory.
Personality/relationships: In life and in death, Simulare endeavors to keep things professional. Since his death, however, he has become increasingly paranoid, finding trusting people difficult. When Charlie approached Simulare with the invitation, he was wary, but has since warmed up to her sunny disposition. Has a respect for Vaggie, and has offered to teach her some of the things he knows about blades. Once was showing off his shapeshifting abilities the others when Angel Dust walk in on him as Valentino. Angel's subsequent panic attack led to Simulare promising to not look like Valentino again without Angel's permission or knowledge. Will occasionally assist Nifty by lifting her into hard to reach places. Appears to be unable to get drunk, enabling him to out drink even Husker, and can play any card game (he has to wear a face after beating everyone 5 times in poker, so that they might have a chance to see his tell). Is friendly to Alastor, who views him as a fellow performer. Simulare doesn't fully trust everyone, but, like with Charlie, he is opening up little by little. Despite his usually professional demeanor, Simulare is not above having fun, and will often use his shapeshifting to play harmless pranks. While technically not an Overlord, Simulare is renowned throughout Hell, a skilled assassin, spy, and infiltrator, using his abilities to get in and out of any situation before anyone knows that he was there. Despite this reputation, only a select few know that he exists and is not a rumor, having never shown his true form to anyone in Hell until now. At least, anyone alive.
OC 4
Name(s): Legion
Title(s): The Devout, The Loyal, The Many-Who-Are-One, Satan's Faithful, Member of the Circle of 7.
Appearance: A Demonic Pig in a suit.
Abilities: Legion can multiply into identical, fully independent copies of himself. A ancient demon that can use almost any weapon, save holy weapons, to which he is vulnerable to, and will burn him upon contact, like this.
Personalities/relationships: While the duplicates appear to act independent, and vary in minor ways, they are all link to Legion Prime, who, if rendered unconscious, will result in the copies disappearing, being reintegrated back into the main "body". Is determined to place Satan back in power, and , while not a member of the Council of Seven, was a founding member of The Circle of 7. Legion Prime is often in hiding, sending out his duplicates to perform tasks for The Circle. The duplicates cannot truly die, as the are merely sent back to Legion Prime, ready to be sent out again. Think like Agent Smith from the Matrix, minus the use of others for duplication. All parts of Legion are willing to die for the Circle, and for Satan.

2020.11.20 19:54 dourdan Rise of Hellion ch9: Break Free

Rise of Hellion ch9: Break Free
Rise of Hellion ch9: Break Free ( Barry Pepper fanart fiction inspiration)
previous: https://www.reddit.com/BarryPeppecomments/jpeeab/rise_of_hellion_ch8_armo

Sitting in the dark, I pulled my metal legs to my chest, rocking back and forth. “Think, Nicki, you need to think of a plan.” I knew I needed to speak to Tony; he was my mentor, my guide, (and most importantly, my TAC liaison) but there was no way to safely make contact. I just needed to assume he was tracking me, despite the fact that I was in a hidden underground base made up of sewer and metro tunnels.
All I knew for certain was that I needed to guard the battery with my life. With my pinky finger I managed to fidget with the joints of my legs. After my stupid decision to show off, I needed to find a new place to hide the tiny data storage device. My new hiding place had to be high enough on my body, to the point where if FENG tried to remove it in my sleep, I would be able to feel it. Unless, of course, he drugged me (but that also implied I would be willing to share a room with him.)
“You almost done in there?” a female voice shouted through the locked door. “You know, this is the only bathroom for thirty miles. There’s a fucking line!”
“I know, I’m sorry.” I took a moment to fix my leg, just enough to be able to leave the putrid smelling porta potty. There was a sink with running water, that was connected to the local water treatment plant. but with no soap or sanitizer. I left the stall, passing by a massive line of no less than twenty female soldiers. Some of them were in full armor, looking ready to kick my ass.
“Hey you!”
“Me?” I asked nervously since I couldn’t see from what direction the voice had come from.
“Your name is Hellion, right?” A female soldier turned her head, shouting from her place in line.
“Feng told me to tell you to meet him in his office.”
“His office? And where would that be?” I couldn’t see her face, for all I knew she was a robot, a plant and I would be walking in to a death trap.
“It’s a giant tent on wheels, you can’t miss it,” the robot replied gleefully, giving her best Rachel McAdam’s impression.
“Ok, thanks.” I didn’t have to look far to find what looked like a bright red circus tent. The structure appeared to be secured to the back of a semitruck. This was clearly Feng’s personal office space. I placed my hand upon the golden handle of the black rubber door. The aesthetic looked like a BDSM sex club; unique but at the same time intimidating.
The door was of course unlocked. ‘It’s unlocked because he was expecting you. there’s probably a shotgun on the other side.’ I truly did not want to open it but I knew I had to. “Hello?” I said through a crack. I could, thankfully, see no trap rigged to the door.
“Do come in, Ms. Hellion.”
I opened the door to a room illuminated by neon lights. Feng was standing about twenty feet away, with his back facing me. “Hi, um. I was told that you wanted to see me?”
Feng stood eerily still. “There’s no way TAC let you just escape with the battery.
“No one lets me do anything,” I said as calmly as I could. “My choices are my own.” I knew he had to be holding a weapon.
“I truly doubt that, little girl,” he said with a chuckle. “The way I see it; either that is not the real battery or you’re a spy and the battery is a tracking device.”
“I guess you’ll never know.” I tried to stand in the doorway for an easy escape but with the raise of his hand he slammed the door shut remotely.
“You will not make a fool of me!” In less than a second, Feng made it across the room and hit me so hard I felt my head slam against a nearby table.
Time moved in slow-motion as three items crashed to the ground; a glass vial, a screwdriver and a notepad. I felt my mind flip a switch that I never knew I had. Step one, I would use the glass vial to hit him in the balls. Since the glass seemed to be shatterproof, this could make for a decent means of attack. Step two, would be a hit to the face, using the notebook. (A quick motion used more as a distraction than an attack.) Finally, I would end with the screwdriver stabbed in his shoulder. That plan should give me ample time to make my exit. Except step three missed.
Feng turned his head, causing me to stab him in the eye so hard the six inches of metal became completely stuck. I could see sparks as something electrical short circuited behind his eyeball. I also saw blood. I landed another kick to the stomach, making sure to grab the notebook (might be important later, you never know.) “You’ll stay down, if you know what’s good for you.”
Before he could reply I kicked him again, this time in the head. There was more blood. Feng was groaning in pain, struggling for breath. Or perhaps he was trying to decide on what card to play next.
“Thanks for the hospitality but I think I’ll be traveling solo.” It was a lie: I needed him to think I had the power to walk away. “I’m just going to say goodbye to Baron, before I go.”
“And Noah?” he asked in a whisper.
“Noah? You mean Cronos?” I leaned against the doorframe, blindly searching for the lock. Upon locating a latch, I was able to get the door open a few inches. I also made sure to wedge the notebook in the hinge for added weight and leverage. “If you think I’m going to trade the battery for Noah’s life, you’re even crazier than you look.”
“Don’t lie,” he said with a maniacal laugh. “I know you had sex with him after a single night.”
“You calling me a slut?”
This got a genuine laugh. “No, but even you have to admit, you’re immature, impulsive.”
“But I also want to stay alive. How do I know you’re not going to force choke me the moment I turn my back?” I’d found a second and third lock. Mentally I was preparing to run.
“Force choke? I’m not Darth Vader. And if I was, I could kill you where you stand.” He paused for a moment before starting to laugh. “Is this about the door? It’s on a preprogrammed timer.” With one firm tug, he pulled the screwdriver from his eye, letting it fall to the floor. “I think I owe you an apology, I’ve given you no reason to trust me.”
“Trust you?” I could feel the bile in my throat. “Do you even remember what you said to me and Anya?”
“On the chartered flight? Yes, I have some memories of that day.” He wiped his face, smearing the blood across his cheek. “I recall telling you that your friends had been dissected for spare parts. However, you can clearly see, by the fact Baron is still among the living, that I was…”
“A lying sack of shit?” I suggested. “Or were you just talking out of your ass?”
“What can I say, it’s just my nature.” His smile was wide, cat-like.
“Your nature…” I muttered, not moving forward. My mind drifted to the fable, ‘the scorpion and the frog.’ Basically, the scorpion asks for the frog’s help across a body of water but when he inevitably betrays the frog the bug claims that evil was just in his nature. “Is Noah here, in your BDSM circus tent?”
Feng chuckled. “Noah is in fact here. Would you like to say hello?”
“I would.”
“Well, right this way.” Feng paused, taking a moment to snap the broken pieces of his eye back into place. The parts were clearly made of a thick glass or perhaps porcelain. The chunks did not fit perfectly but he managed to close the wound enough to stop the bleeding. “Much better.”
There was a noticeable crack through his retina but I gave him a cheerful, flirtatious thumbs up. “Looks good.”
“Says the girl who stabbed me,” he said with a jovial laugh, as he walked to a door on the opposite side of the room. “If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you had a fetish for violence against men.
“Does this place have multiple rooms?” I asked. This seemed odd even knowing what the full size of the vehicle looked like.
“No,” he replied, holding open the door. He was clearly not going to offer any further information. He wanted my raw, emotional reaction. Because what I saw next was something out of my nightmares.
The front of the tent was actually the cab of a recycled semi-truck. (That part was admittedly kind of cool.) Chained to the front and side were no less than ten bodies in various stages of undress. They were arranged like trophies. Some wore armor, while others were missing limbs. I couldn’t even tell of any of them were still alive. Each body was attached by their arms, legs and neck. There was some variation depending on the availability of limbs. But what each body had in common were their lack of eyes. They all seemed to be covered in duct tape (regardless if the body in question also wore a helmet). I assume this was to avoid what happened next.
Somehow, they all sensed my presence and started to call out to me. “Nicki! Hellion!” the victims were male and female but their neck restrains were compromising the clarity of their voices. (So, I was still unable to tell which one was Noah.) “Get out of here!” “You need to run!” the words echoed off the walls of the tunnels, pounding into my head like a jackhammer.
Covering my ears, I fell to my knees, making sure to keep my knife at grabbing distance. “Where is Noah?”
In the paltry lighting of the tunnels Feng looked every bit like a typical scorpion. He of course giggled like a child as he approached a tall male body wearing yellow body armor. An opaque motocross helmet concealed his face, but I could tell, the victim was more metal than flesh. “And before you get all judgmental, I offered baron and Noah the same opportunities but only one of them wanted to play nice.”
And I was supposed to be ok with this? I wanted to scream, cry or (do as the others said) and run. That wouldn’t have ended well. I needed to play the part of a confident, empowered female with a strong stomach. “I wish to speak to him.”
“Most certainly, it will be my pleasure.” Feng easily removed the helmet revealing Noah’s face.
One thing was painfully obvious; Feng was the person I met on the roof, not Faust. Feng was the one who had Noah’s mutilated body on a leash like a wild animal. He was the one who wanted me to steal the battery. Was Faust even real? Or was Feng the puppet master for multiple characters? I leaned forward to touch Noah’s face, and nearly puked all over myself. He was missing both eyes and had a mouth full of black, oil-like blood. It was clear he was trying to speak but all that came out were choking, labored breaths. That is, until Feng punched the armor, hitting Noah in the chest. This seemed to activate a robotic voice emulator.
“Nicki?”
“Yeah, it’s me.” My body started to move all on its own. My brain didn’t want to remove the chest piece, I already knew what I would find. But my hands apparently wanted to see for themselves. I opened the latches on his shoulders, and hips, allowing the metal plate to fall to the ground. There was no skin on his chest. His neck and throat were robotic, connecting to a metal skeleton. This would have been acceptable but there was just enough human parts left to look ‘out of place.’ In addition to the skin on his face, his heart, lungs, stomach and intestines were still present, (and rotting.) The smell was overwhelming.
Noah opened his lips and spoke a quick sentence through the digital voice box. “Hold me.” I did as he asked and took a step closer, standing on his feet to be able to look into his eyes. “I’m sorry.”
Noah shook his head, but with how his neck was restrained the movement appeared more like a muscle spasm. “You must end this.”
I could feel him tighten his stomach, subtly motioning to a weapon at his hip. Wait, no. That wasn’t his body moving it was mine. I could feel the fetus inside me moving, reaching out to its father. I could no longer stop the tears from falling. My child would never know him. Did I even know him? I cupped Noah’s face in my hands; he was warm, human. “There’s so much I want to say to you.”
Noah nodded, his face trembling in pain, fear or whatever emotions he had left in his mutilated body.
“I don’t know if we could have been together. Maybe you were just fun, maybe you would have been an awful father. I’ll have to keep telling myself that, because otherwise all I have are fairytales in my head.” I kissed his forehead for one final goodbye. “I’ll never forget you.”
I pulled my knife from its place on my thigh. Under any other circumstances the blade wouldn’t be enough to engage in combat (probably why I was allowed to keep it with me.) But in that moment, I was overcome with strength. I slashed Noah’s throat over and over. Sometimes I was cutting wire, other times flesh. When no one tried to stop me, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was what Feng wanted. All I knew was that it needed to all be cut; anything that was his life, his human soul, and anything that could have kept him alive against his will. Noah deserved to finally be free. With one last cut, his head fell off, bouncing off another prisoner’s arm before landing at Feng’s feet.
I quickly spun around and stabbed Feng in the chest. I wanted so badly to finish him off, but there was no other weapon in sight. Feng looked down at the blade and laughed. “You think you can destroy me?”
With a flick of my wrist, my blade went straight up, cutting through Feng’s head like piano wire. “Yeah, I do.” I paused with my knife, finally free of his flesh. “Wow.” I honestly did not know I even had that kind of strength. My hand was covered in blood, trembling with energy. Behind me, I heard a slow clap. First from one person then two and then a small crowd.
“Baron?” It was more of a wish than a question. As far as I knew there would be an army of Feng’s creations training their weapons on me.
“I had a feeling I bet on the right horse,” Baron said as he placed his hand upon my shoulder.
“You bet on me? How do you figure that?” I asked in a catatonic voice. “I came here all on my own.”
“How do you think you found the doorway?” he pointed out. “But like I said, I ‘bet’ on the right horse. It was never a guarantee that you’d go through the door, you could have turned back, maybe went towards the US border. I’m sure you could have found someone to help you on that side.
I turned to see if he was smiling, laughing, anything to make this seem like an elaborate trap. He wasn’t. He gripped my hand, as his body faced forward unable to look away from Noah’s headless corpse.
“You seem to switch horses a lot,” I muttered. I could feel my eyes blinking away tears. “but I’m one to talk. I came back too late.”
Baron sighed, sharing our moment of grief. “There’s no way you could have made it back any sooner then you did, not with that TAC guy breathing down your neck.”
“I could have at least tried.”
“You’re here now and that’s all that matters.” Baron pulled me close for a hug. “Noah was a good guy. The world is full of good people.”
Good people who get royally fucked over by life. “I don’t want to go to Alaska. I want to kill Kitsune.”
Baron nodded. “Good to hear it.” He opened the door of the truck, already holding a pair of keys. “We can discuss the details once we’re back on the road.”
“Back on the road?”
“Yeah, that’s what I said.” He picked up Feng’s body and tossed it in the passenger seat. The two halves of his head hung open like the petals of the world’s most upsetting flower. “The best way to get a meeting with Kitsune is to pretend her science fair henchman is still alive.”
“Ok, I get it, we’re constructing a narrative,” I said as I took a seat on the floor, trying to stay closer to Baron. “You and I have the battery and after we’re done completing any business in Canada that (Feng was after) we offer it to her in exchange for a promotion.”
“A promotion?” Baron said with a laugh. “You gotta dream bigger than that, little sister.” He was about to turned the key to start the engine.
“What about the victims?” I quickly asked, grasping his hand.
“You mean the people chained to the outside of this freakshow on wheels,” he replied with a sigh.
“Can we take down the other bodies?”
Baron shook his head. “I think you mean ‘should we take down the bodies?’”
“Why, are they all as bad as Noah?” Even if they were that made no difference; they deserved their freedom as well. Even death had to be preferable to being a living hood ornament.
“You mean are they alive?” he asked.
I offered the only explanation I could, “I heard their voices telling me to run.”
“That would be the hive mind,” Baron said in a brief, matter-of-fact tone. He turned on the engine, causing the truck to lurch forward on a predetermined path (like a train on tracks.)
“Hive mind?” I asked. I had heard the term in movies and TV. “Like Star Trek?”
“Pretty much,” Baron said with a chuckle. “I’m surprised you know about that. It seems a little before your time.”
He was right. How did I know about the Borg species from Star Trek? “Each new victim is harvested for their thoughts and memories.” Which was why they all seemed equally concerned for my safety and wellbeing. I was about to speak further when I noticed Baron switching to a different, higher-level tunnel. “Where are we going?”
“Heading east,” Baron explained. “We have business in Ontario. But along the way, there’s a body dumping port just south of Edmonton.”
“Sounds good.” I was glad that we would be getting rid of the body in due time. “When do we meet up with Kitsune?”
“I’ll have to hack Feng’s files to be sure but as far as I know the plan is to make it to New York to deposit the truck at the regional depot.”
“So, what should I do?”
“Right now? Take a nap. I’ll wake you at the next pit stop.”
“Sure,” I said looking at the dead body. “I’ll get right on that.”
“There’s plenty of room in the lab area,” Baron said, trying not to laugh.
“Thanks.” I found a place on the floor to sleep. The rubber mat was soft enough to make a decent bed, although I was still cold. I curled into the fetal position, falling asleep to the sound of the wheels making contact with random metal tracks.
In my dreams, I awoke on the wooden floor of a western-style train. “Wow, just wow,” said a familiar male voice.
I stood up, looking around at the nearly empty train car. “Faust?”
The man laughed. He was facing away from me but I knew who it was. He had the flower child’s blonde hair, and peach skin with just a kiss of sun. He wore a light blue suit, looking more normal than usual.
When he stood up and turned to me, my blood ran cold. He was older, with deep-set eyes; he looked like my father. “Care to take a seat?”
I didn’t have much of a choice. I sat across from him, that was when I noticed the tray of cookies and a pot of coffee. My stomach was rumbling. At least I could get something to eat. I grabbed a pink frosted cookie in the shape of a butterfly and helped myself to a paper cup of coffee. “This is so good.”
“I’m glad.” The man chuckled. “I think it’s time I told you my real name.”
“Sure,” I replied, swallowing the mouthful of food.
He paused for dramatic effect while pouring a cup of coffee for himself. “Abaddon.”
“Is that supposed to mean something?”
He simply shrugged. “You would know.”
“Are you even real?”
The question brought a smile to his face. “I’d like to be.”
“Ok, I get it. You’re my unborn baby.” Saying the words out loud made them suddenly tangible. There was a living being inside me; a little boy with my father’s stern face, and Noah’s blue eyes. Actually, the more I thought about it, Abaddon looked a lot more like Noah. Especially when he smiled. “What can you tell me about the future?”
“What would you like to know?” My son took another sip, clearly deep in thought, when suddenly he smiled again, squinting his eyes ever so slightly. “You want to know about Dad, don’t you?”
“Sure, I’ll take what I can get.” I could feel my cheeks flush. Since Noah was gone, there had to be a husband (or long-term partner) in my future; someone who helped me raise my son.
“The man who made the choice to become my father, he’s wise, powerful, kind. In my timeline, he’s an elderly man, on his deathbed, ruling over a land on the brink of war.”
“War or revolution?” I asked. “Is he a king or a rebel leader?”
“That will all depend on you. I can’t go into details, but needless to say, I need you…”
“To survive?” I asked, assuming the easiest answer.
“To be the mother I know.”
The lights flickered, as the cabin shook. “Are we headed towards a tunnel?”
“Next stop is the body dump,” he said, tossing his cup out a nearby window. “If I were you, I’d try to make it to the surface at least for a few hours.
“Because that’s where Tony will be looking for me.” I needed to believe that. He was likely the father Abaddon was speaking of. But why would I name my child Abaddon?
The lights flickered again, casting the world into darkness. I awoke on the rubber floor, to the sound of the truck’s massive breaks. I blinked my eyes, brushing my hair from my face.
“Welcome to Edmonton!” Baron shouted happily. Clearly he was on somekind of stimulant.
I stood up and made my way to the door. The outside world was snowy, and calm. A true vision of peace. “Do you think we could stay here for a day or two?”
“Why? Did you want to check out the mall?”
“Kind of,” I said stretching my back. “That and I want a decent night’s sleep, (and maybe a hamburger.)”
“We can make a longer pit stop once we cross the border. Deal?”
“Yeah, I get it. We need to stay on schedule.”
“Exactly, now be a doll and grab the head.”
I did as he asked and together, we said our last goodbyes to the creature known as Feng. May he rot in hell. I felt a warmth in my heart; like whisky, vodka and mountain dew; a sensation of pure happiness. I could sense my baby. Placing my hand to my stomach, I felt a small limb reaching back. I would see Noah again. And for now, that made everything ok.

2020.11.15 22:02 Petyr_Strong (Spoilers Main) All men have a role to play: The Masters of Whispers

The position of master of Whispers is one of the strangest compared to other positions of the small council regarding the amount of time in existence, members selected, and institutional organization. Unlike other small council positions, it wasn’t created by Aegon The Conqueror it was created by his second son Maegor the Cruel. It had its unofficial founding when the people of the Red Keep and King’s Landing started to call Tyanna of the Tower the “Mistress of Whispers” (which has a double meaning Mistress being simultaneously the feminine for Master and a synonym for lover, which Tyanna was before getting married to the king). It always maintained a semi unofficial character with many de facto holders of the position refusing to take the official title.
The Master of whispers unlike other “Masters” have no default bureaucracy all their power comes from the webs of agents they build and are entirely personal. It also occurs to me that they have very little supervision from the Hand or the King; having a lot of freedom to conspire against the crown if they want. Being in the Small council appointed by the King they seem to be legally capable of whatever they want unless it goes against a direct order of the king or it is treason. Or at least they can do whatever they want even do it is illegal with no reprisal from the king, at least until it is known when the King would have plausible deniability (this question was a source of Debate in the Learned Hands Podcast in a great episode when they invited Joe Magician)
This position is the one that has fewer individual members (even counting unofficial ones), and they held the title for very little time. Counting only when they use the title it sums up to 47 years and if you add the Rego Draz, and Bloodraven’s period as Hand it increases to 80 years. In any case, it is an amazingly small number if we compare it to the 300 years that the small council has existed. This is probably because the Lords and Kings of Westeros consider the espionage as unhonourable and cowardly, with most of the time the title being held by women, bastards, and foreigners with one great exception being Larys Strong but I would talk about him later. Another reason might be that most Masters of Whispers were very unpopular so Kings might want to avoid this bad image of their predecessors. For Example, Jahaerys wanting to distance himself from the rule of his Uncle, and Aegon V and Jahaerys II wanting to avoid the image of being control by their Master of Whispers like Aerys I. Most masters of Whispers served in moments of war or crisis (Rego Draz, for example, started to act like a spymaster after Elisa Farman stole the dragon eggs) and in the Reigns of especially paranoid Kings. All of this makes how Larys Strong and Varys held the title in relatively peaceful times with lazy Kings so rare.
So, if the position is so unpopular, dangerous, and rare why have it in the first place? Why don’t simply use external spymasters that do not sit in the small council? First of all, we have two examples of the latter option with Qyburn with Kevan and Lady Mysaria with Rhaneyrha. But the position has its advantages: it puts fear in your enemies and avoids possible plots against you, for example, Doran Martell being so afraid of Varys he makes his daughter rebel against him, and it also gives the Westerosi Lords a false sense of security. Cersei believes when she appoints Qyburn and he gains a lot of Varys former contacts that the spies come with the position, it has been suggested that like most things Cersei thinks that it is BS with Varys little birds remaining loyal to him. But Cersei is more comfortable with this idea.
I will now pass to analyze the individual master of whispers. Considering what they added to the position, there use of magic, how loyal they truly were to their respective king’s and other particularities
Queen Tyanna of the Tower (42-48 a.ac. 6 years): Tyanna was the bastard daughter of a Pentoshi magister (being simultaneously a woman, bastard, and foreigner) that worked like a tavern dancer. She turned into the paramour of Prince Maegor and Alys Harroway when they were exiled in Pentos. She came back with Alys in 42 a. c. after Maegor usurped the Throne and it has been theorized that she helped Visenya to revive Maegor after his trial by seven. She married the King in the same year and started to serve in the small council. At this moment people started to call her Mistress of whispers, which has a double meaning like I already explained, she probably fed Maegor with information that increases his paranoia. We also know of several cases of overseeing the torture of political prisoners like Prince Viserys and Alys Harroway. She tries to be Maegor’s right hand in political matters, but they rarely share a bed in later years. It was rumoured that she was a witch that talked with rats and spiders, the truth of this is questionable with several other powerful women in Westeros being called witches by their enemies. What is true is that she created a web of spies and informants in the Red Keep and King’s Landing, but it doesn’t seem that it extended very far. The only grand-scale conspiracy she avoided was the rise of Aegon The Uncrowned because several lords sent ravens to Queen Alyssa Velaryon. She was killed by Maegor himself after she confessed under the threat of torture that she had poisoned his son in the womb. This would show that she wasn’t that loyal to Maegor himself; she simply saw him as a way to gain power.
Rego Draz (50-59 a.c. 9 years): He was a pentoshi merchant of very humble origins, the reason why he wasn’t allowed to be a Magister. That is why he accepted to be King Jahaerys’ Master of Coin. This being an essay about The Masters of Whispers and not of the coin I would not talk a lot about his financial management of the Realm but it must be said that he was one of the best ones we know of. He was still very unpopular because of his foreign origin, his strange faith, and the rumours he was corrupt. These rumours were probably lying because he was much wealthier than the Throne, and the King have him in great esteem. He acted as Master of Whispers after Elisa Farman stole the Dragon eggs “paying good money to bad men'' to learn as much as possible of possible buyers and be prepared. He uses these same agents to ask about the whereabouts of Aerea and Balerion. There is no mention of him using magic like his predecessor, but it seems that he was much more loyal and thankful to Jahaerys. He was killed by a mob during the epidemic known as the shivers and Jahaerys took a great effort to avenge his death. It must be mentioned that Rego shares great parallelism with Ilyrio and maybe we will see Ilyrio’s story ending similarly.
Lord Larys Strong Unknown 127(at least)-131 a.c. four years minimum: Larys Strong “the Clubfoot” is unique among the Masters of whispers, he is the only one of them that is the true born son of a Westerosi Lord and even held the title of Lord of a great castle, like Harrenhal while sitting in the Council. He was the first person to officially use the title of Master of Whispers, as well as the title of Lord Confessor. He did have a condition that makes him unfit to fulfil the traditional knightly role being born with one twisted foot, so he dedicated himself to torture and espionage from an early age. He came to the city with his brother and sisters when his father was named Master of Law and he started to work with the royal confessors. House Strong rose quite high with his father replacing ser Otto Hightower as Hand and his brother Ser Harwin “the Bonebreaker” becoming Rhaneyra’s lover (and probable father of his children). Both his brother and father (and maybe his sister that aren’t mentioned anymore) died in a fire at Harrenhal when they were sent away by the king to stop the rumours of his grandson's parenting.
Several theories have been put. That it was caused by Harrenahal ghosts or it could be that Harrrenhal curse is enacted by real human beings. That it was king Viserys, I find it strange because he didn’t do anything about all his succession problems and he seems to like Lyonel enough to name him Hand. Even that it was Larys Strong to transform in lord of Harrenhal this seems to be prejudiced against his physical condition, I don’t think this is true at all, Larys don’t seem to care about Harrenhal at all he realizes that his true powers come from the spies, he names a castellan and not even cares when it is taken if his brother turns into the Lord he would also support his political career in KL. The last one has been Daemon Targaryen, he would have killed Harwin to get near to Rhaneyra and her claim to the Iron Throne, it is also implied he kills Laenor Rhaneyra’s husband, so I see it as the most likely suspect.
The Clubfoot is named master of whispers sometime before 128 a. c. (maybe he was already Master of Whispers at this point, but it seems unlikely), I said that it was pretty strange to name a Master of whispers in times of peace especially with such a lazy king so I think he already started creating a web of spies when his father was hand to help him in all the factions that were forming in court. When ser Otto was renamed Hand and realize of Lary’s influence he decided to add him to his cause naming him Master of Whispers to help support the claim of his grandson in the future.
When the Dance of the Dragons started Larys was part of the Green council and proposed a blood oath to defend Aegon II claims (it is clear that Lary’s true loyalty belongs to it only to himself and I would probably write an essay about his motivation). At the start of the war Daemon Targaryen took Harrenhal with Caraxes and Larys didn’t seem to care. He continued acting like Master of Whispers and Lord Confessor for the Greens. He tortured Blood after the Blood and Cheese incident, probably learning new passages around the Red Keep. When Rhaneyra took King’s Landing Larys disappeared through these passages and send the King to Dragonstone and his heirs to Storms’ end and the Reach. Without knowing these Prince Aemond thought he was a traitor and killed every other Strong when retaking Harrenhal. He remains hidden during Rhaneyra’s short Reign over KL spreading rumors to adermin her when she left, the city he used Ser Perkin the Flea (most likely one of his agents) to take the Red Keep with his pretender. He joins the new pretender Trystane Truefyre until Lord Borros Baratheon arrives; he then negotiates with him to surrender the city, name Ser Perkin Commander of the City watch, kill Trystane, and promise to marry Lady Floris daughter of Borros. As part of the agreement, they pardon Corlys Velaryon to gain his fleet (Larys proposes to kill him quietly if he wasn’t useful later). Corlys presented his contra offer and the Queen Alicent almost refused if it wasn’t by the sweet words of The Clubfoot. After the defeat at the Battle of the Kingsroad, “The Sea Snake” proposes a peace agreement naming Aegon the younger (later Aegon III) Aegon II heir. The King and his mother were horrified and proposed killing him on the spot, Larys instead proposed to poison him. Then he went with Corlys to convince him the King wanted to kill him and get his help to make a coup. Lord Larys ruled the city with Corlys after the Riverland’s army arrived in the name of Aegon II. When Cregan Stark arrived and put all the conspirators for killing the King on trial Larys simply said “When was a wolf ever moved by words?” and accepted his destiny not even asking to go to the Wall like the rest of the conspirators. He is probably one of the most mysterious characters in all of the books and we will probably not know anything else from him in the books (I hope he is properly adapted in a House of Dragons and we learned more things), he is my favorite historical character, and I don’t see any better way of closing this that with a quote of Mushroom “Was there ever a man as devious as the Clubfoot? Oh, he would have made a splendid fool, that one. The words dripped from his lips like honey from a comb, and never did poison taste so sweet.”
Lady Mysaria 130 a.c. 1 year: Mysraia of Lys was a sex worker and dancer of Lys, also, known by her rivals like “Lady Misery” or “The White worm”. She turned into prince Daemon's favourite partner when he was acting as Lord Commander of the Gold Cloaks, and he even took her over to Dragonstone when he was exiled by his brother. She got pregnant by him and was gifted with a dragon egg for the future baby. When king Viserys found out he ordered his brother to exile the White Worm and recovered the egg, she suffered an involuntary abortion at the sea when she was traveling to Lys. We knew nothing about her for several years until the start of the Dance of the Dragons. After Prince Aemond killed Lucerys Velaryon, Rhaneyra wanted revenge so it was Daemon who ordered Lady Misery to take revenge killing one of Aegon II's sons. Lady misery, that had recently returned to the city, was in charge of the specifics of hiring a former gold cloak (Blood) and a former rat-catcher (Cheese) to do the did. The story of how Blood and Cheese forced the Queen to choose one of his sons and then killed the other is probably known by all of you. The White worm wasn’t found, but not for lack of will, it is said the Gold Cloaks look in every brothel, but either she was very good at hiding or they were still loyal to the Rogue Prince.
She started to act as unofficial Mistress of Whispers when Rhaneyra took the city, never actually sitting in the small council but reporting to it or Rhaenyra in private. She, also, restarted her sexual affair with the new King consort with the Queen’s approval. She extended her web through all the city and the Red Keep and fed the Queen with rumors that increased her paranoia. At this time she is started to use like a boogieman for the historian, with both Septon Eustance and Mushroom attributing to her all sort of horrific stories: that she proposes to tern Queen Alicent and Queen Helaena into whores, and that she cause Helana’s suicide by telling her the story of her sons, Maelor, death. After Ulf the White and Hugh The Hammer betray the Blacks at the battle of Tubleton Queen Rhaneyra called the White Worm to the council to ask her about nettles loyalty, the Mistress of Whispers answer that she was having an affair with Daemon and would probably betray her. At this moment Lady Misery abandoned her loyalty to Dameon, maybe feeling betrayed by him (which is rare considering that Dameon always looks the company of other women and maidens, which could support the theory Nettie wasn’t his lover, but his daughter), and sided with Rhaneyra. The white worm unmasked a conspiracy to free Corly Velaryon, but she was left in the Red Keep when Rhaneyra left the city. When ser Perkin took the city (probably under the patronage of Lord Larys) Lady misery was subdued to walk naked along with the city (like Cersei). But she was also whipped and suffered the full anger of the people, so she didn’t make it. There is no mention of her using magic (strange considering how often it is said about foreign women) and her webs didn't seem to go beyond the city. In my opinion, she was at the beginning very loyal to Damon because of their love, but later she just followed Rhaneyra under a purely utilitarian objective of earning power and status.
Brynden “Bloodraven'' Rivers Unknown-209 a.c. (serving as advisomaster of whispers) 209-233 a.c. (serving as hand keeping his spymaster role): He was the man that revolutionaries the position changing the scale of his web and how high he rose. The ironic thing is that he is never said in the books to be the Master of Whispers; we just know he sits in the Small Council and he then was Hand. Bloodraven was the bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen and his mistress Melissa Blackwood, he left the capital at a young age when her mother was replaced by another bracken mistress, but he probably kept some of his mother’s friends there. His mother was reputed to have even been friends with the Queen herself. Brynden was invited by the New King Daeron the Good with all his half-brothers, it was at this moment that he probably started his love for Shirera Seastra and his rivalry with Aegor Bittersteel. It is unknown his relationship with Daemon Blackfyre, but I think they had a good relationship like Daemon seemed to have with everyone. This did not avoid Brynden from denouncing a possible plan to rebel against the Targaryen from Daemon and Aegor. He probably started to serve as an advisor (and unofficial Master of Whispers) shortly after this, considering my logic that this position is usually filled during, or near a great war. He remained loyal to the Red Dragon during all the War with his main intervention were the leading of the Crow’s Teeth in the Battle of the Red Grass killing Daemon Blackfyre, which earned him the nickname the “Kinslayer”. He served for several more years in the small Council Advising the most ruthless policies against the Crown’s foes.
When King Aerys I rose to the throne after his father’s death he named Brynden his Hand. He named him over his brother probably because of the shared love of the study of the higher mysteries. Bloodraven's rule as Hand is one of the longest in history and he was as ruthless as he could. The main conflicts he needed to face were: the great spring sickness, that he solved by forcing the people to don’t leave there regions and burning all the corpses of KL; then he suffered a drought that lasted more than a year (draught that his enemies blame him for because of his kinslaying); he then successfully defeated the second Blackfyre rebellion thanks to his webs of information; he advises in favour of killing Bitersteel after he was captured in Third Blackfyre Rebellion, and when Maekar Die (the king that he also served despite the rumoured animosity between the two of them) he call a Great council, killing a Blackfyre claimed he had promised safe conduct. For this act, he was exiled to the Wall where most of his men follow him for shire loyalty. He was the first Master of Whispers that extended his web beyond just the City, or the Crown Land, creating one that extended to all of Westeros and maybe also Essos, or at least he extended the notion he did which terrorized his enemies. What I mean with him revolutionizing the position is that there is no way that Varys considered making such an intelligence web without Bloodraven doing something similar before.
The level of magic he uses in this web is unknown, maybe he just could warg inside crow to be able to intercept messages, or greensee but not at will, what is clear is that he was able to glamor himself (like when he probably disguised as ser Maynard Plumm). He was unable to repress a Grehjoy rebellion during his rule because he wanted to keep his defenses in case of a possible Attack from Bittersteel. Like I already say he changes the traditional roles related to the Master of Whispers position, he was a bastard that made him form a lower station that true Westerosi nobles, but he was also a knight, he leads his company of archers and later entire armies. He also rose above being just a spymaster turning into a capable administrator that ruled the realm for decades maintaining his resources as Master of whispers when doing so. He is also one of the rare cases when a Master of Whispers was truly loyal to the kings he served this was because of his hatred of the Blackfyres and Bittersteeel, he did try to gain more power, but I think he did so because he thought it was for the best of the Targaryens and the Realm.
Varys “The Spider'' ~278-300 22 years at least: The Lyssenne Eunuch is the Master of Whispers during most of the main series. He grew up with a mummer troop where he learned how to act and disguise, abilities that would help him later on in life, he was sold to a sorcerer that cut his cock and let him to die in the streets. He created an alliance with a bravo called Ilyrio and soon started selling steel objects back to their owners. He later started training orphan kids into stealing secrets and selling them, he got such fame that was called upon by the King of Westeros. After the defiance of Duskendale, King Aerys was very paranoid, and Varys just fed him with more rumours that supported this. He gained lots of enemies in the court, but even after Robert’s Rebellion, he was pardoned. This doesn’t make a lot of sense; it probably talks about how good Varys is at doing his job. He kept himself useful during all the Reign of Robert and Joffrey giving information to everybody and remaining an Allie of all. His main asset is information so he gives the right information to the different players to accelerate his plans, like when he informs on Dany’s wedding so that Robert orders her assassination and this makes Drogo promise to invade Westeros. For most of the series, Varys keeps repeating that all he does is for the good of the Realm and the smallfolk, but this is more than dubious. Plans such as organizing a Dothraki conquest of Westeros and killing Kevan specifically to make the Realm more unstable do not seem to be in the best interest of the people or cutting the tongue of his “Little Birds''. It has been largely debated about Varys' true loyalist (Blackfyre, Brightflame or just doing all for selfish reasons) I think mainly for meta and thematic reasons that he actually believes in the greater good of the Realm. He probably has some personal reasons to support Young Griff, but I think he has convinced himself that supporting him is the best long-term plan. I find that it is much more interesting for a guy that has taken the end to justify the means in the most sincere way (not like Tywin that just wanted the best for his House or himself) to a point in which it is indefensible. He planned to create a civil war to sit a kid on the Throne that may not be that good of a king and to do that he sabotaged Kings that could do better.
During most of the series, he was training to avoid war reacting to Littlefinger's plans to start one. He did this not for the good of the Realm, but because Young Griff’s forces are not prepared to take Westeros yet. When the war continues, he adapts his plans (one of Varys greatest virtues), he starts working to create more chaos. For example, he frees Tyrion (and later sends him to be an advisor to (f) Aegon) to later manipulate him to kill his father, but he remains in the Red Keep undermining the Lannister regime. I won’t describe all of his plans but if you want to see them in detail I recommend an essay of BryndenBFish and Radio Westeros episode holy dedicated to it, I will just say he has a great ability to adapt according to the changing situation.
Like I already said his origin story involves being castrated by a wizard, so he has professed great hatred to magic for a long time. I think this story is true (there was no reason to lie to Tyrion about it) and that he generally holds true to his promise not using magic to extends his web. Varys is one of the more interesting characters of the story and I cannot cover him enough in this essay so I would recommend you read more analyses of him by better creators.
Qyburn 300a.c.-Present: We know little about Qybrun’s life; he was probably born a peasant or maybe at some port city. What we know is that he joined the Citadel and transformed into a Maestre. But he wanted to know more about the nature of life and death so instead of just opening dead bodies he started opening living ones, for this crime he was stripped of his chain. He developed a hatred for the citadel and probably started working as an unofficial-Maestre. He joined the Bloody Mummers (the exact timing is unclear) a group that provided an almost unlimited amount of injured people he could cure, or experiment on. During the war of The Five Kings, he has transformed into the Maestre-like figure of the twisted castle that is Harrenahal, where he is rumor to be a necromancer. He helps Jaime heal his hand and accompany him back to the capital, where he tried to get his favour, according to Roose to regain his chain. What I find more likely is that he is looking for a new patron for his activities. He finds that patron in Cersei is content with how he helps her in several forms and advises her (most of the time he is just bootlicking her). He takes the roles of Grand Maestre, helping cures “The Mountain”; Master of Whispers; and royal torturer, for example, with the Blue Bard. He starts wearing a white robe to contrast with the grey one of the Maestre there are several instances of contrast between the grand Maestre providers of the “official” information throw crows and the Maesters of Whispers providers of the unofficial one. Cersei provides him victims, mainly young women as well as Gregor, and installations to his mad scientist experiments. His work as Master of Whispers is regular at best and horrible at worst most of his advice is quite stupid and there is certain evidence that most of Varys’ little birds are still loyal to him and are giving Qyburn wrong information. In the show, he rose to the position of Hand that is still possible in the books when he is still partially loyal to Cersei going to visit her in the sept, but he has one foot in each side already reporting to Kevan privately. Despite he is a great estudios of the Secret mysteries he doesn’t seem to use this knowledge for his position and his only result so far is being capable of reviving or at least maintaining alive the Mountain as Ser Robert Strong. In the matter of his loyalty he strikes me as most Masters and Mistress of Whispers he is loyal to Cersei because she provides him power and the resources to make his experiments. That makes him more dependent on Cersei because other people aren’t so willing to let him continue these experiments.
The Master of Whispers position has greatly involved in Westerosi History. From being a mostly unofficial position with only limited information mostly restrain to the Red Keep and King’s Landing, it evolved into information from both Westeros and Essos. Masters of Whispers have gained constantly more and more power as well as transforming themself into an essential part of the small Council functioning. It is hard to predict who will occupy the position at the end of the Books or if it would be necessary at all (considering Bran’s abilities). There are several other people that occupy spymaster roles that I did not mention such as Littlefinger, Lysonno Maar; and even Melissandre (not spies but fires in her case).
I always feel very attracted to this more obscure position and how it held so much power so if you have any extra thoughts on the subject put it in the comments. Remember English is not my first language so please excuse my grammar mistakes.

2020.11.12 19:40 fresh_geosmin Under the Ground: New monsters (Part 4)

I thought I had been prepared for any of several possible reactions from my colleague after I confronted him with my questions about this secretive build site in the middle of the wilderness, and that I knew he was a monster in hiding. Instead, he did one I hadn't considered: he studiously ignored me, though sometimes with low-level hostility.
I was no better off, and I was still at this site and still feeling like I was watching a nightmare unfold in slow motion. I strictly banned all coffee from my days, tried to get enough sleep, and tried harder to bury myself in work. Still, I remained frazzled from constant low-level anxiety and nightmares.
I think it was four or five days after confronting Marcus that I got a "pager call" in the evening. It's not exactly a pager, but this little thing I have to wear for shit-work calls. I was hunched over another mistake I must have made in Leapfrog that was giving me weird numbers for the third time, and when I finally realised I was getting buzzed, I jumped like a cat. My hands were shaking as I held it and peered at the cheap TN LCD screen.
"Exploration 0700 SEC"
This was what the "find a leak" type calls were called, but the "SEC" (report to security) raised the little hairs on my skin, because I knew this was probably about the fluid AJ and I had seen and gagged on when we visited sublevel 1. People were still talking about it. Nobody knew what it was, although I had the feeling nobody had bothered to test it either. I mean, we had a whole damn chemistry lab right here. The saying goes something like, nothing can hide from mass spectrometry.
But this call meant I had to go back underneath that building. No. No way. I didn't think I could do that again. I stared at that little screen and couldn't stop shivering.
"Hey, you okay?" Rushana, who'd been working next to me, stood looking concerned. I jumped again. I'd forgotten where I was, and that she was there, but recovered enough to reassure her that everything was fine.
"You don't look fine. You look sick," she insisted.
I nodded after a moment. "Yeah, I just got notified of an appointment scheduled for tomorrow. I won't be in." I always felt bad leaving work unfinished for these Westie-related things, especially the times where, due to sticking to a human form for around two months straight, I couldn't hold it back anymore. I had to set up "medical leave" for those periods and wait out the two or three days hidden away until I could shift back. The first time that happened to me, I flipped my shit (luckily I was at home), but now I mostly have an idea of how long I have and can schedule things as needed. I manage my condition. But with RM having me do shit-work for them now and again anyway, I don't often have those long periods of time. Instead, I was leaving work unfinished so my employer could hunt idiot leaks, lost engineers, or... monster piss.
Rushana looked at me with a really concerned look, and I realised my hands were still shaking, holding the little pager thing. I put it back in its plastic sheath and sat back down again, with my hands on my head until I noticed and set them down. Now all I could do was stare blankly at my screen. My polyline edits were nonsensical and my data didn't fit the map I'd imported... screwing up basic stuff. It was late, I was spazzing, and my brain was fried. Fuck it, I decided, and went to bed.
The next day I got up early and walked to the main building with my other badge and a backpack. It was June at the 59th parallel, and the sun was up before 4am by now, so I decided to find a place inside to shift. There was always some kind of closet somewhere.
This time I was reporting to a different area—a security desk instead of engineering and maintenance. These were the people who stayed behind when the kill team left. The guy at the desk here looked near retirement (so he must have been in his hundred-thirties), weathered medium-brown skin with a thick grey moustache and long grey ponytail, wearing an RM-branded hat. His coat said "Lembree".
When he saw me, he pointed beady black eyes on me steadily as I approached the desk. I cautiously held up my badge. He scanned it, and I could see the tattoo on his wrist. He was reali (a bit of a derogative term from an anonymous satirical short story that had appeared decades ago. Many shifters called them this instead of "De Real". It's a little like how people sometimes say 'politzei' instead of 'police'), which made sense but still put me on edge. He put the scanner down and just stood there staring at me, freaking me out. I didn't know what to do but stare back.
Another guy showed up to break up the staring match. "Oh, I think we're ready then." He was also in a uniform but not a De Real. He was younger and seemed... preoccupied. He only gave me a glance, which most people seem incapable of.
"What?" I signed to both of them.
"We've got more goop. It's in the basement now," the De Real guy called Lembree drawled. His voice sounded like it was carved out of Albertan rock. I think I must have automatically scrunched my nose because he gave me a look and laughed. "Oh yeah, this'll be a treat."
"We need to know if it's, ah, seeping up from the lower levels or the foundation," the other guy clarified. I learned he was Lenny, one of the maintenance leads. I silently thanked the gods it wasn't Dickwad again. "We thought it was something left over from the tunnellers, but they've been gone for two weeks and we cleaned that stuff up, and the last several days there's been more."
I rubbed my face. This was going to suck, but no worse than looking for a sewage leak. I had anticipated something like this, and kept my sandals on so I wouldn't touch that noxious stuff with bare feet.
The day went mostly how I expected it would. Lembree and Lenny brought me around to various places where that burning-invert-with-ammonia-smelling fluid seemed to be coming out of the floors and walls, and I checked if it actually was penetrating the surfaces. I mean, they could have figured this out themselves by chipping away parts of the concrete walls and looking at what was underneath. But hey, there was a cheap Westie available, so why do unnecessary property damage? It seemed to me that Lembree was sticking by me more to keep me in check than to ensure I saw everything, but I noticed the other guys we passed in hallways in the basement and sublevels seemed... positive about me. Sometimes on an Upper World-oriented site where I do search-work, I get a good rapport with the maintenance team, sometimes I don't. Most of these people at this site had never seen me before though, so I wasn't sure what was going on until we called it a day.
The stuff had seemed fresh, and definitely had been placed there (squirted there, sprayed there...) by something walking around, and was not seeping out of the walls or anything. I'd also found it in places they hadn't looked, like the old stairwells. Now the security people and the reali would have to go see if this was a monster problem. Finding monsters was above my pay grade, fortunately. I tried not to think about something spraying that stuff in the underground floors of that building. What the hell could be doing it? My brain decided I needed a reminder of the toothy open cavern of a mouth of the tunneller going after us in the elevator, and my heart skipped.
As I pulled my badge out at the end of the day to get scanned out, Lenny came up to the desk. "You pulled that guy out," he said without looking at me. I turned and looked up at him, a little surprised. He shrugged. "Everyone's on edge since he got flown out, but we know you're the one who got him upstairs." After a moment I nodded. Lembree beeped me out, still giving me a beady-eyed stare, and I scurried back to the closet, intending to grab my pack and shift back. But when I got there, the shakes started.
I just clutched my bag as a wave of nausea and shakiness went over me, and my heart started pounding. Actually, it had been beating unusually fast even when I went to get badged out, but I thought Lembree being a De Real and the badging had been making me nervous.
No matter how often I have a successful badge scan, every time I need to do it I get nervous. All I need is some incompetent baboon to have mistyped something into a computer, or some database on the other side of the planet to have a Unicode meltdown because open-sores MySQL has two goddamn utf8-looking flags and then someone is taking me aside for extra checking. I hate it. And while I'm always careful to stay in areas where I'm allowed to be, I also try not to let the reali touch me when I'm handing things to, or accepting things from them. Touch was how they controlled you.
So that's normal, but this wasn't. My heart was really pounding. Hard. Westies don't really sweat, except through the palms and feet... and mine were damp and my breathing was quick. It wasn't warm inside the building.
I darted out a door at the back of the building, where outside the sun was already dipping below the tops of the surrounding black spruce. I sat on the ground with my back against the building wall and tried to mentally calm my heart down. It was pounding so hard I worried it was going to tear itself up. The nausea and unstoppable shivering was bad too, and all I could do was put my head down and focus on breathing and not puking. Was this the slowest heart attack ever? I was even more terrified to go looking for the onsite crew doc, who probably didn't know anything about Westies anyway.
It seemed to go on for hours before my heart calmed down and the nausea seemed to fade away. I was still shaking, but at some point I felt able to go back inside and hunt down caffeine, though not well enough to shift. What just happened? I didn't really believe it was a problem with my heart, because I've heard panic attacks feel exactly like what you'd think a heart attack feels like. But if it was anxiety, why now? The day had been pretty uneventful. There were zero monsters or scares or anything. Maybe it was from being underground anyway, even though it was during the day with people and the lights on.
Unlike last time I did my caffeine hunt, now there were plenty of people wandering the halls, so people saw me going towards one of the coffee stations, but I didn't care. No, that's a lie. I just told myself I didn't care. People staring at me does bother me. In some places in the Upper World people might see Westies, but places like this and the kinds of people who work in them, even though they're Upper Worlders, rarely see shifters of any sort but one. I found an unattended break room with a coffee machine and little plastic tables with chairs, and decided to just stay there whether people came in or not. My drugs and state of mind were more important at that moment, and I was having trouble shifting back. I needed to calm down first.
I made and downed an entire pot, used the washroom, and the shakes finally seemed to have tapered off. But as I was starting on my second pot and opening a fresh pack of cigarettes, someone in the doorway said my name in a surprised tone. I jumped and looked up, feeling immediately sick again.
Marcus was half-stepped into the small room, staring at me. I froze.
Neither of us moved for a moment. Then he stepped the rest of the way in, and peeked into the hallway behind him in a way that seemed a little exaggerated. When he looked back again, I still hadn't moved.
"Well this explains some things," he said finally. I didn't reply or react. How did he know it was me? I figured this could only make things worse. Westies are seen as corporate shills, the loyal servants of powerful Families and possibly spies. I briefly wondered whether I could outrun him through the doorway and escape, if he just moved closer to the supplies counter first. I suspected he was quicker than he let on though.
When I didn't move, he gestured towards the coffee pot sitting next to me on my little break table, which was insulated so didn't reveal how full it was. "How much is left?"
In answer, I picked up the pot and moved it over to the other side of the table towards him. He grabbed a cup from the clean rack and poured it full of coffee, then took out a small glass bottle from his pocket and droppered something red into his cup. "Iron," he said as if I had asked. Iron?
He grabbed one of the plastic outdoor chairs they had stocked the breakroom with and sat down across from me in a deliberate way. Then slowly took a swallow of his coffee and leaned back, looking at me. I felt like a mouse being eyed by a hawk.
"You're working here and you don't know what's going on? You honestly don't know what happened here years ago?" he finally asked in a low voice. I shook my head.
He leaned forward. His face was blank, but his voice had dropped to an angry whisper. "I don't believe you."
I shrank back. Him believing me seemed to be in my best interest, but I wasn't sure how to do that. "They didn't tell me anything before we came here," I began signing, but he started shaking his head.
"I'm not as fluent in that as I should be. It's on my list," he said while waving a hand in my direction. I blinked at him a few times and frowned. Well, I doubted he would complain or report me if I did the other thing.
Then I'll sound like this, I sent at him. He showed a bit of surprise. I waited, but he remained silent.
So I continued. I came asking you what was going on. Nobody tells me anything.
"Bull. What are you doing here right now??" he asked.
They had me go looking for the source of that stinking fluid, I replied. They wanted to know if it was coming through the foundation. It's not.
"Are you here on this project as a Weston's shifter, or are you here as a geologist?"
I'm here for geo work, but my contract has a 30% bullshit clause in it. I frowned. Of the three places that would even give me an offer, all of them had a do-Westie-shit clause.
"How... Why is that? I've never heard of Westies doing... other work."
I sighed and gulped down the rest of my cup, poured myself some more, and then gave him the ten-sentence story of my life starting from entering the Upper World. It started out just factual, but by the end it was littered with swear words, and I can put sailors to shame.
"Hm," Marcus muttered into his coffee. "And so you applied to RM."
I applied everywhere, but turned out most of my applications and emails were blocked before anyone saw them, I replied with a mental hiss. I have to follow all these rules. I have to check myself in and out of everywhere with a sort of monster passport. I have a fucking case manager. I'm only allowed a certain amount of mixed contact with lower-world organisations. If there's mostly lower-world people on a job, then I can only take it if someone's available as a... a "minder". If I wanted a career doing what I've wanted to do for years, RM or one of the other majors in the Upper World was it. I finished my new cup, and poured more. The uncharitable thought entered my head, that the pot felt too light and he'd taken a whole cup's worth.
"Hm. And so this is why you had something to do with the kill team coming here?" This seemed important to him.
I nodded. They didn't want to waste any well-paid or valuable personnel to find a missing engineer, so they just had me do it. They didn't know that we'd almost get eaten. I let out a shaky breath and leaned my forehead into my black little hands. How did you know I was... me? I asked.
"Same smell," he said simply. I looked up at him with surprise, but he was already shaking his head. "No, sorry. Rushana pieced it together."
I started. Rushana?? Rushana knew? Doom scenarios started spinning through my head. More people I worked with learning what I was? My stomach cramped.
"Yep. She said you'd gotten some kind of message and looked ill, and matched that with what I'd told her. That you'd said engineering sent you, and she knew a Westie had pulled someone out." He waved a hand towards my feet. "She said the amount you eat and your poor choice in safe footwear were other clues." I blinked at him, then looked at my shoeless, hairy black feet with their nasty-looking claws, and tried to tuck them more out of sight. I had put my reeking, goop-bottomed sandals into a plastic bag.
I wasn't sure about the shoe thing, I admitted. I don't know much about Westies. Mostly just what's on those monster pages on the network, and what I've noticed myself.
Marcus stared. "The online network? That's your main source of knowledge??" His voice was filled with disbelief. I nodded again, and shrugged with frustration.
I don't exactly have anyone I can ask. I don't know any Westies. I've met two in total and never worked with any. I had an evaluation in some building once, to see what I could do, and that was the last time I was actually with one. I get by on, as I've said, pure luck and the benevolence of the gods.
Marcus' eyes looked at the wall while he thought about something. I was still worrying about Rushana. So Rushana knows? Did she tell Robbins, or Kish? I shook my head, feeling panic. I won't be able to work if this gets around. Everyone knows each other in this field, and this job is everything to me. Who the hell would work with this? I gestured to myself.
Marcus leaned back, nodding. "I understand that." Of course he did. "We're working together, Rushana and I, on the problems with this whole project. But it's just us. Nobody else that I know of is aware of the history of this place, except probably the project managers. Once you came asking questions, I thought you probably did as well. Thought you were fishing for what anyone on the crew might know, especially after hearing Rushana's theory."
He sounded like he didn't think so anymore, but I shook my head in denial anyway. I just have this pit in my stomach, and nightmares every night. You aren't an RM lifer, and... I figured you'd know something about monsters.
Marcus finished his cup and scrunched his face slightly.
Is the coffee that bad? I asked, though I was sure his reaction was to what I'd said.
"Well, it was just ground a half hour ago, wasn't it?" he said with his usual lack of expression. I gaped at him.
That was terrible, I told him. He responded with a large toothy fake smile. I took the pun as a good sign, though the smile looked like he'd just shoved a bird in his mouth like a cat pretending innocence. It put me on edge. Then it was suddenly gone again.
"I was also quite unhappy that the kill team was called here. They killed off so many tunnellers." He adjusted his glasses. "They may have run at you, but they don't eat people. They 'farm' a type of mushroom which makes up most of their diet."
So you do know more about them, I pressed.
He nodded. "But now that so many have been killed off, we have an actual monster problem. The cause of that smelly liquid."
I shivered. Something else? By the time I was done with this project, I was going to have heart damage from the constant fear. What now? I asked.
"Besides the fungus, tunnellers consume something which I believe has no human name. I doubt those De Real people know they even exist." He looked at me pointedly. "And these ones do hunt larger animals. They're dangerous. Not very big, but without something keeping them in check, they've been multiplying in this building and the surrounding area." He sighed. "Nobody's ever seen them before. It's as if they only exist here, and only relatively recently. The last sixty years or so."
I sat thinking about that. So... what happened here before? Why is this building here?
While I was asking this, I felt people moving around in the halls, coming towards us. I reflexively looked at the doorway.
So did Marcus. "We might want to finish this with Rushana. At the lab," he said, standing up. He rinsed his cup and walked out as two workmen walked in. I cleaned up my stuff, hit the washroom again (this time I was able to shift back, after several tries), and hurried to my lodging for clean clothes and a badge swap.
It was almost dark as I walked to the lab. This seemed important, but I was thinking about the sleep deprivation I was having recently.
When I swiped in, I found Rushana and Marcus sitting at the three-terminal spread with our current groundwater model on the screens, talking in low voices. Nobody else was there. Kish had left us the day before, having finished the main work she'd been contracted to do. I felt a bit of relief from the thought that she wouldn't get hurt by anything going wrong in this place. Robbins hadn't been around much recently. I wasn't sure why.
I realised I was feeling apprehensive. I had only cared that Marcus didn't think I was spying on behalf of RM, but it really bothered me that Rushana knew what I was.
They were both silent and looking at me as I approached them. Not all the lights were on in the lab, so most of the light was coming from the monitors, making the whole thing seem surreal. "He told you everything?" I asked Rushana. She looked so small sitting in her chair. Like me, she was about five foot nothing.
She nodded. "Yeah. Things make a lot more sense now."
"Um," I started, then tried again. "So... you're an Upper Worlder?" I asked. Meaning, not a monster. She nodded with a small smile. I glanced at Marcus.
He shrugged. "She knows I just play one on TV." I wondered how Rushana had learned that. I rolled a chair over to the station and waited. Marcus did a presenter-wave at Rushana, so she started.
"Okay. Back in the 50s and 60s, I was actually doing work on freshwater algae," she began, "and my employer back then was Julian-Daly, a company which at that time was moving from manufacturing hormones to offering protein sequencing and slowly started doing work that was more... exclusive to the Upper World."
"You used to be a biologist?" I asked. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by that. With such long life spans, Upper World scientists had the time to completely change what they specialised in and still manage to spend decades within a subject field. I pushed down the wave of bitterness and resentment that tried to bubble up.
"Yes! It was actually my work on rivers that pulled me over to hydrology," she explained. She continued her story. "I was looking for some files in an office I was visiting, when I found something I think was maybe misfiled. Julian-Daly, which later became BioSens, had struck a deal with RM, where RM would offer this remote area and transport services, and whatever Julian-Daly developed would be for the good of both organisations." She looked at me. "From documentation that I have, it seems Julian-Daly had built more than RM was aware of."
"The sublevels," I said.
She nodded. "I also have some details of the kinds of research Julian-Daly was doing here. They became BioSens in the 60s, but the same people continued to oversee the project here."
"Which was?" I asked.
"According to the documents we've got now, they were initially looking to figure out how the De Reals reacted with monsters. The idea seemed to be, if anyone in the Upper World could detect and deal with shifted non-humans and wild monsters then the De Real families themselves would lose their power within the Council and with the public." Rushana's small face twisted. "Those cells in the sublevels? They had people in them. Humans and non-humans. Not all of them were adults."
I swore under my breath.
Rushana opened a drawer and pulled out a USB stick, and placed it into a laptop on the table. "This is an encrypted digital copy we made of the scans of papers I found." She authenticated with a key, then opened a folder on the laptop. "Here," she said, turning it towards me.
I glanced at Marcus, because I always keep track of him if he's out of my field of view, then back at the laptop, and scooted my chair towards it. I scrolled around what clearly looked like photocopies, and saw tables with IDs, sex, age, and species columns. Two tables seemed to mostly have humans, while a third had mostly non-humans. I didn't see "Weston" in any table, but they were mentioned in a paragraph underneath, as some sort of separate test group. That made sense if it was true that De Real people could sense Westies easiest. But the two human tables were a little confusing.
"Is one of these a control or something?" I asked Rushana.
"Two groups were volunteers and lived in the barracks above ground," she said. "The other group seems to have been assembled later, and were kept out of the official numbers given to RM."
I shivered. "And not volunteers, I assume."
"Not my people in any case," Marcus said, shaking his head.
"But why? What were they doing down there? Did... did they succeed?" I asked.
She shrugged. "We're not sure. The documents we do have are about the agreement between the two corporates, but only this part," she pointed at the laptop, "of any lab notes. We're trying to get access to those notes, which we know they kept." She looked back at me. "But there was some sort of falling-out, and RM closed everything down and ended their agreement with BioSens."
I thought a moment. "So the question is, now, why is RM back? Maybe it's just because they still own this land and wanted to build something here anyway."
"Maybe," Rushana said. "But they're not very open about what exactly they want to build here. In fact, they seem to be deciding what and how much they'll build based on our ground assessments." She looked up at the ceiling, thinking. "Are they planning to remove the evidence of what happened? It seems they don't know everything BioSens was doing here… Are they waiting for us to stumble into what BioSens did, like we did the sublevels? Are they aware of the new creatures in the ground here? Are we supposed to be their excuse to bring a complaint to the Council against BioSens? Like a, 'We just wanted to build here and oh my we happened to find this atrocity' kind of thing?"
"That sounds like… plots within plots." I scratched my head. "If RM was that good at planning, more of my past jobs would have gone smoother." Of the various Corporate Families, RM wasn't particularly known for pulling off complex machinations.
"Yeah," Rushana looked flustered. "I overthink things sometimes."
"Are you sure about that?" Marcus asked her. Rushana stared at him a moment, then glared at him.
"Stop," she warned.
"Sorry," he said insincerely. "I'm a horrible person." He gave her one of those creepy, toothy fake smiles.
Rushana shook her head, then looked at me. "Anyway, you might be able to help with finding some answers. I think we're looking for sick people. People, and maybe small animals, with young inside them."
I groaned. "'Young'?"
She nodded. "These creatures mature inside other animals in a mostly parasitic fashion. We know that the fluid is waste from nymphs living inside animals. It collects in various places, then leaks out. If there's so much that they're worried there's some kind of leakage from the ground, then it must be people." She shook her head. "I mean, it's not like there's moose or bear wandering around in that building."
I frowned. "But... don't people notice? How could anyone ignore, or hide, that smell?"
"It gets that smell after contact with air," Marcus said. "If there are infected people, they must be hiding it from everyone. Maybe especially because there are leftover guards from the kill team wandering around here."
People infected with some unknown monster would probably not be treated, I knew. For the safety of everyone, they'd be quickly executed, and their bodies dealt with afterwards.
I thought about that a bit. "So... could I find these people, you're asking. I have no idea," I said honestly. "I'm... my brain is kind of crippled in that way. That's why I don't do high-end locator or navigation work." My eyes wandered to the monitors. "But if I did find someone, then what?"
"Well, we have two problems," Rushana said. She held up one finger. "We need to figure out how to alert the security teams here without them realising what we already know." She pointed at me. "If you found someone infected, you could just report it to security. All they'd have to do is minimally follow up and they'd discover the problem real fast." She held up a second finger. "The other thing we need to do is find where those lab notes were kept—so far as we know, they're not digitised, and they might still be onsite here. Somewhere."
"And then?" I asked.
"Publish it," Marcus said. "Publish all of it, and make sure the Upper World news picks it up. None of the other Corporate Families will be pleased to know of two Families conspiring for more power, even though they all covertly do it, and if in the process a new dangerous monster was created... both Families will get backlash, and the security teams can focus on preventing these things from spreading." He pushed up his glasses. "Now that there are lots of hosts within touching distance, and people and supplies travelling in and out... and especially now that they're no longer held in check by predators," his voice turned into a grumble at that part, "there's the distinct possibility that this will spread." His eyes gazed unfocused at one of the monitors. "Mostly, they need to get such a hard metaphorical and public kick in the gut that it will be a long time before someone else thinks they can kidnap and experiment on sentient beings they think are expendable, just because they could get away with it."
I thought about the cells in the sublevels. About people, even kids inside those. Just locked in the dark, waiting for someone to drag them out at intervals to do painful and terrifying things to them. That was too close to my own past experiences, and my hands started shaking again. I hid them in my hoodie's kangaroo pockets.
"It's because of what happened here that we never signed any treaties with the Upper World," Marcus said softly. The smarter monster types (except Westies), the ones allowed interaction with the Upper World, agreed per group one way or another to something called the Treaty of Vladivostok. It's what keeps them off the automatic kill lists. "Our rules are, if you run across human artifacts, go another direction. If you encounter a live human, get away. If you're captured by humans and can't escape, die and destroy your body."
My eyes widened. "You can die on command??" I asked him.
He shrugged. "Sure. I mean, it's extreme, but if it's necessary…" He sighed a long sigh. "It's why I need to really be careful. Not many of my people even know shifting is possible, and humans don't know at all. I'm breaking all the rules..." he stopped.
"They'd kill you?" I asked.
"Worse." Then he blinked and shook his head. "Why am I telling you this? Um. This place is messing with my head."
I briefly wondered if that constant background low-level anxiety I'd been having wasn't because of the strange building or the encounter with the tunnel monsters, but something to do with the site itself... then immediately dismissed it. That's magical thinking.
I shook my head, confused. "So you're risking all that because some human Corporate Families had a secret prison lab here decades ago?"
"No, I was doing this before. For other reasons," he pushed his glasses up again. "And while we knew about what happened here, the Upper World does not. But Rushana stumbled across this event and wanted to, ah, fix it, I suppose?" He looked at Rushana, who was nodding.
"This is just so wrong and it can't just stay buried," she said. "It seemed he agreed with me and I thought he could help." She tilted her head. "And maybe we lucked out. Maybe you can help in some way too."
I looked down at my feet, now wearing ratty canvas shoes. I'd scrubbed my sandals in the shower with pumice soap and bleach and had left them drying. "I hope I can. I mean, I can try."
"Well, you're either part of the solution, or part of the precipitate," Marcus said with his usual lack of expression.
"I will kick you," Rushana growled at him, and he gave her another scary grin.
I rolled my eyes, then frowned, thinking how would I go looking for anything shifted, without being seen. "We need to be really careful of reali wandering around though. Hell, I was doing a job they called me there to do, and the security guy stuck to me like glue. Like he thought I'd do... I dunno what," I grumbled. I looked up and gave Marcus a glare. "Don't let them touch you. I'm serious. Maybe you avoided dealing with them all this time doing lower-world research work, but all it takes is one time and you're toast." With skin contact, De Real people could tell whether someone was a monster, and while in contact, they could heavily influence you. It's one way they hunt any of those who break the treaties.
Marcus held up an index finger. "Noted."
With that, it seemed our super-secret monster meeting was pretty much done. It was late, and we all had to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning. I'd forgotten to ask Rushana or Marcus how the infection spread, or how to avoid it myself. I'd forgotten to ask a lot of things. Too much freakshow information in one period.
I wondered how I was going to go around looking for things which were poorly defined in my head. Hidden filing cabinets? Infected people? I thought a "real" Westie could probably do it, but I was malformed. Incomplete. Broken.
I crawled into bed, expecting to pass out. No, huge amounts of caffeine and nicotine do not keep me up. I have an unfortunately speedy metabolism anyway, but stimulants don't seem to help with staying awake either way. But still, I found my brain whirring, going over everything that'd happened so far. The masochistic movie reel of my mind showing me chilling experiments, people locked in concrete cells meters below the earth, where no-one could hear them scream. The huge teeth and hairless ratty face of the tunnel monster coming at me in the elevator. The thought of people walking around filled with little worms eating them from the inside.
Tomorrow was another day.
